This quilt is all about bicycles. One of my local friends sewed ...
I was up quite late last night finishing up the binding, but I did it! I finished my Hands2Help Donation quilt just in time!
I think I started making these blocks back in December of last year. The initial vision for the quilt was to only use rainbow-colored prints. For months, the making of the blocks were few and far between. I just didn't come across much of the right fabrics. I soon found myself adding in striped fabrics.
A lot of my interactions with scraps this week was sorting and putting them away.
I did get one lonely string block completed.
The real accomplishment is I finished up the 28 16-patch blocks I needed to finish my Hands2Help Challenge quilt for this year. I was really wanting to make all of the blocks from striped fabric, but I really don't have the time to search for them.
Even though I have been busy putting together the blocks you send, I am still finding time to make some of my own quilts. I enjoy having the tiny bit of variety.
Today I have three of my own finishes to share with you.
This first finish - I have shared some of the blocks previously on my blog. After completing the first blue/brown block drive, I found myself with a lot of brown strings. - from backings or from leftover bindings. So I decided to turn them into 16 patch blocks.
Once I ran out of brown scraps, I added ...
read moreI am a little slow to the party but I am participating in the Hands2Help challenge going on over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict. I have participated every year for at least a decade.
I signed up months ago but have just recently been thinking about what project I am going to designate. Almost all of the quilts I work on lately would probably qualify but I wanted to choose a project that is made with fabric from my stash/scraps.
As ...
read moreThis week I spent most of my time digging through my purple scrap bin.
I finished out March dealing with a few piles stacked around my sewing room.
I definitely felt a sense of accomplishment.
First, I finished sewing together the last of the green switchplate pieces I had sitting next to my sewing machine. It looks like now I need to get out my purple scraps and start cutting. The cycle never ends!
I also made one sad 16 patch block for one of my donation quilt projects. I sew up these whenever I come across a 2.5" strip that is long enough to complete a block.
I actually feel like I made some progress on the scrap front this week.
Lots of cutting occurred this week. I made a few kits for compassion quilts, I dug through scraps and cut up squares and I put together backings from various odd pieces.
But looking at what I actually have to share, it appears that I have not been doing much.
I have been playing with scraps all week. But is all sitting next to my sewing machine waiting to be put together...
Now that I am making quilts to donate to my local hospital, I have been looking around my sewing room for some simple starts for future quilts. One of the first ideas I came up with was making some 16 patch blocks.
I blogged about my UFO dilemma here. I now have 20 blocks finished, enough for a lap size quilt. I have certainly had fun making these, but, what to do with them, now. I have all but a bit of the scraps used, and, I am ready to move on from here. I don't want to make a quilt. I am guessing I will put them into the parts department.
I wanted make a few 16 patch blocks from my 2 1/2 inch squares. I made several colors last year as part of the color block challenge with Debbie Brown. But, I didn't make black. I took my squares with me to our guild's open sew Saturday and made a few blocks. When I was done I only had a a few left in the box, but, I have a whole drawer that hasn't been sorted yet. This year's quiltville leader/ ender challenge uses 2 1/2 in squares. Hopefully, that will reduce the drawerful ...
read moreGood Morning Quilters! While away at a retreat, I worked on several UFOs and put them on a design board there, so I could take pictures for you. (1) Using up old, old scraps (some from my Mom's stash) to make some baby quilts. I used most of the old scraps, the ugly scraps, and inserted some children's prints and polka dots to make it cheery. I think I will choose a solid background, add
read moreWe love our renters. They bring in such lovely quilts. The one downfall for me is after seeing all these lovely quilts I now have a long list of quilts that I have to make now. I don’t know if it’s the colors or the piecing that draws my eyes more. You can tell me exactly what makes them so pretty. This is a renter roundup of some of my favorites over the last couple of months.
First up in the renter roundup: A Bright 16 Patch
This is a fun quilt by Leann. The bold gray lines ...
read moreLast Sunday I shared a few block photos of a new scrap project I had started.
I was making some 16 patches from 2.5" squares and framing them in some 1.5" solid strips. The initial plan was to make the entire quilt from these framed blocks.
As I started sewing blocks and realizing just how many scraps in these colors I really had, I decided to modify my plans and make some of these 5 x 5 blocks to use up even more scraps.
I used most of my green 2 1/2 inch squares to make 16 patch blocks for the Debby Brown color blocks quilt along for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I think I have 3 left. It makes me nervous, and, so, I have to resist the urge to randomly cut more, so, I will have "enough"
I found this free quilt along with Debby Brown from Alycia at quilty girl. I had started making postage stamps last year for the rsc. and once the gate was opened, I enjoy making 16 patches as well.

It was time to sort through my 2 1/2 inch strip drawer. The color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy is yellow. I wanted to make 16 patches in yellow 16 patch blocks for the Debby Brown color blocks quilt along, but, I only had 5- 2 1/2 inch squares to be found. I pulled out the shortest strips and cut squares. I really didn't count.
Even with an extra Saturday in January, I did not get all my pink projects finished for the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy. I am using my 2 1/2 inch squares to make 16 patch blocks for the Debbie Brown color blocks quilt along. I am making the blocks each month with the rainbow colors, and, then, deciding which blocks for which quilt at the end of the year. I wonder if a person can ever empty the 2 1/2 inch square bin.
